Alex Wilmore, award-winning author and illustrator, reached out with a request to pair his newest children's book, "Spyceratops," with an interactive animation. He envisioned a fun arts and crafts tutorial video with 2-3 minutes of animation to complement the book's release.
In this tale, Spyceratops, a small but mighty dinosaur, embarks on daring missions with her trusty sidekick to foil the suspicious deeds of Grandad. Think Mission Impossible meets Scooby Doo in a prehistoric setting akin to the Flintstones.
Alex provided voice recordings, storyboards, and amazing pose doodles to ensure I captured Spyceratops's character accurately. The concept for the engaging tutorial was to have Spyceratops 'radioing in,' guiding kids through crafting homemade spy gadgets from everyday items like toilet rolls and foil. The aim was to inspire young readers to immerse themselves in the book's world through hands-on arts and crafts.
Preserving Alex's colourful hand-painted style was crucial, but time constraints ruled out frame-by-frame animation. So, I mixed digital hand-drawn elements, textured strokes, and character rigging techniques. Exporting at a lower frame rate of 12fps, I aimed to keep the original illustrations' charm and energy alive, bringing Spyceratops and her adventures to life.
